Idea of a University by John Henry Newman Is This Still...
In 1852 when John Henry Newman wrote his essay, ââ¬Å"The Idea of a University,â⬠he wanted to convey that a Universityââ¬â¢s purpose was to be able to educate first-rate members of the social order. Newmanââ¬â¢s theory, although over a hundred years old, still applies to todayââ¬â¢s college students; many are seeking higher educations to not only lead to successful careers, but to also become an improved person in society. In a time when human endeavor was being redesigned, as industries, philosophies, and sciences were growing and affecting the world, Newman wrote an essay explaining the ideas and goals for seeking a liberal arts education. He states in his thesis that the function of such education, ââ¬Å"is that of training good membersâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦With those characteristics, one also becomes a friend, a companion that everyone aspires to have by their side. Todayââ¬â¢s high school juniors and seniors apply to hundreds of college and universities a year, but why? What is the purpose of higher education in todayââ¬â¢s world? Is it to obtain a degree in hopes of establishing a flourishing career, in order to make money and have a successful, content future? Is it to grow as an individual? On the other hand, is it for something as superficial as being able to attend the parties? Young men and women choose to further their education with aspirations of achieving the American Dream. However, the American Dream is a vague outline of what everyone wants to be. It is someone who attains this who is an individual established in a thriving career, and has a loving and caring family. It is someone who is socially fit, who does not have to worry about financial troubles. A person who is a friend of many and disliked by few has come across this dream. Finally, the most significant factor to meeting this goal is that a person is pleased with the way life is. After looking over the mission and vision statements for University of Minnesota, Morehouse College, Evergreen State College, California State University, Thomas Aquinas College, Duquesne University, Drexel University, and Robert Morris College, it seems that the colleges themselves are agreeing with the ideas of Newman.Show MoreRelatedThe Ideas Of A University922 Words à |à 4 PagesIn John Henry Cardinal Newmanââ¬â¢s discourse ââ¬Å"The Ideas of a Universityâ⬠(1852), he sought to answer the question, ââ¬Å"What is there is to show for the expense of a University; what is the real worth in the market of the article called ââ¬Ëa Liberal Education.ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ While this question was asked in the 1800s, many in todayââ¬â¢s society still ask it today. The Corporate social responsibility creates a word of mouth that is beneficial for the organization: If the company conducts an act that would benefit the stake holders, society, customers it would not only enhance the entity into a greater level but also can guarantee a growth that is long term along with success. It also plays a vital part in creating the brand prevalent not only among the competitors but also other organizations, media, and people who are the direct customers. The company that keeps its focus on the efforts of CSR is Levis. Its look out is to decrese their environmental footprint by acting in human rights and environmental causes. Levis has a Worker Well-Being Initiative that has the objective to help and improve the life of their employees. Levis has also trademarked their Water-Less campaign by using less water when manufacturing their products. Starbucks Coffee The company of Starbucks Coffee focuses on social and ethical responsibilities. Partnering with Ethos Water, Starbucks is helping bring clean water to over one billion people who does not even have access to it. Conclusion Several ways are there about processing the best program of CSR for a business. In the approcahes from above it has been seen how different companies take different approaches. Some organizations give back to their employees, few of them give back to the community, and at times to both. The society develops a positive feeling for a brand that is engaged in taking the initiative of providing education to the poor children, plantation of more trees for a environment that is greener, providing the villages with electricity, giving employment to many individuals and similar actions.
